Two belgian sheepdogs, an eskimo dog, and a cat. I go through a little over four pounds of food a day and it's way cheaper for me than feeding kibble was. When I did feed kibble I fed Earthborn Holistic. Not to mention the health benefits of raw are endless from healthier systems to shinier coats.

FYI peeps…high end pet food is twice as more costly than food. for example: I have 5 dogs. for 5 dogs, it would cost me nearly $1,000 for high end quality dog food. i feed raw and have for 2 yrs now and it costs me 400-500 a month…including supplements. so do the math. dont assume raw is more expensive. Time wise, yes it takes me 20-30 minutes to prepare the raw for 5 dogs. or i can do 5 minutes for kibble or canned and pay alot in vet bills and costly illnesses later. so whats a few extra minutes for your pets overall health.

After my dog's adoption, I fed her Purina dog chow, alpo canned food and eukanuba dry food to help gain weight and hair growth. For 2 months, it made her the same or worse – she started scratching, diarrhea, more hunger, and gain no weight. After learning corn is not digestable for dogs, and that Purina's food are almost all corn, I switched to diamond natural and chicken soup for the dog lover's soul. The change was quick. In less than a month, she gained weight, grew less hungry, no diarrhea and her coat looks great. What you feed to your pet does matter.

My schnauzer was brought up on wet and dry 'Bakers' feed. Bakers killed my dog as much as I am to blame for being brain washed by society thinking that the feed was safe for my dogs. It contains soya, wheat, eggs and fake vegetable flavourings ect.. things that dogs react bad too! even had pork and beef argh! My 2nd schnauzer as lived longer living of my own prepared foods of brown rice, chicken and carrots. I also use 'James beloved' dry feed which is all organic chemical and flavourings free! Up yours cheap dog feed! My dog still has its fur, teeth and organs to keep her going.

Holla! Have you tried the Samsa Dog Chef Genie (google it)? I have heard some great things about it and my friend also got great results with it. Their Dog loved the change in diet 🙂

I think the best way you can feed your pets is to feed them what you eat, as long as it's not processed with chemicals as well.

Feeding raw is way less expensive than the veterinary cost of a sick dog or cat

Informative documentary. Animals are still dying from toxic pet food. My healthy dog passed away on 7/2/2014 from eating toxic chicken strips packaged as dog treats. He suffered from kidney failure and toxic complications. The FDA currently only has an advisory for pet owners. Pet owner beware!!

Realistically the most any legislation will do is to mandate more inspections, but until the Congress funds MORE INSPECTORS human food products will take precedence. Alas, for our dear pets.

If I could afford it I would make homemade pet food for my cats every day. The same kind of chicken or pork or beef I would eat. The same kind of rice and oils. The same kinds of vitamins, calibrated by type and amount for cats.

It disgusts me that even the Scientifically Recommended Diets prescribed by vets are prescribed because the vets are trained by the selfsame vendors who make that food.

The troublesome ingredients from abroad [CHINA] need to be inspected and blocked at the border. But how many FDA agents are available to do that?

Look at the human food inspection levels and you'll get an idea. There will be poor supervision unless more agents are funded.

Puppy and kitten mills exist because the government does not expend funds for inspectors to range through the countryside inspecting all animal facilities.

It always comes down to the government funding factor. Not to mention the lobbying of members of Congress by Agribusiness that runs the pet food industry.

This is true. Veterinary "prescription diets" are also mostly unnecessary and very unhealthy. "Prescription diet" is a trademarked MARKETING TERM. This non-commercial site has a vet that explains,
    'Prescription/Therapeutic' Diets –
"These diets represent an area of the commercial cat food industry that is very misleading and, quite frankly, a source of embarrassment for this profession."

She also has info on how to decide what vaccines to give, warning about Convenia, preventing diabetes and urinary tract problems in cats. See non-commercial site recommended by many rescue groups – http://www.Catinfo.org

The info there helped save many lives, including our rescued cat, and friends' cats.
