Taking a rerospective view of the McCullough place, werecognize in ir more of the characteristics of nature than ofart—wdiich, after all, is only the highest style of art. Likesome indulgent parents, who with a sparing use of the rodhave brought up large families of children to love and honorthem, Mr. McCullough has reared these monuments of histaste and indulgence with a sparing use of the pruning knifeand shears, and now^ they have grown up to enrich him withbounteous crops of delicious fruit, and to bless him with theirgrateful shade and coolness. We have, perhaps, lingered longer among these invitingbowers, than may seem consistent with an impartial accountof our suburbs, but we have tw^o apologies. First, we wouldhave it distinctly understood, that Mr. McCulloughs place is

Eesidents of Norwood and Pleasant Eidge, and the public generally, are not only welcome, but are invitedto enjoy the delightful drive afforded by Mound avenue, which traverses these grounds. Add to these a foct that stillfurther illustrates the public spirit and liberality of the gen-erous proprietor: For many years, on the Anniversary ofIndependence, and in the interest of religion and patriotism,Mr. McCuUough and family have entertained a circle of hun-dreds of friends, with the free use of their home and grounds, and spread before them ample collations of the choicestliuits and viands. Having enjoyed more than one of these re-unions, thewriter, like many of our readers, can speak from experience. We shall now glance at this beautiful villa belbre us—theresidence of Col. Lane, represented in the engraving. The main portion of this handsome building is of brick, with a tasteful portic

The male bird was calling near by, so wepatched up the stub and continued on our way. ^ The above is the firstpart of an excellentarticle on the Chick-adee, too long to bequoted entirely. The location of thenest of this species isusually less than fourfeet up; but one en-terprising pair that Imyself watched at Mt.Tallac had chosen a deserted wood-pecker excavation in a dead tree, nearly forty feet from the ground. Thelocation was that of the chest-nut-backed chickadee, but I amas positive about the identificationas one can be without a gun. Inthe same grove another pair occupied a hollow stub onlytwo feet up, and so frail that a touch broke open the side. There were three eggs in the nest when discovered, and onewas added each day until there were seven, when sittingbegan. In fourteen days the seven small Chickadees hadbroken the shells, and lay a wriggling mass of naked bird

Thisenabled me to discover that the nestlings were fed by re-gurgitation until four days old, when fresh food was given.Whether or not the adult digested the food I do notknow; but in every feeding for the first four days theinsects were carried to the young in the throat of theadult, and forced up when needed, accompanied by alarge amount of saliva. The young Chickadees were slow in feathering, andremained in the stub nearly three weeks; then a sponta-neous exit occurred early one June morning. For fullytwo weeks longer the young were seen begging to befed by their indulgent parents, and showed little dispo-sition to become self-supporting. Their plaintive dee-dee, dee-dec was uttered continuously w
