226/365 – Annual Posting of the Birthday Cake
Things One and Two celebrated their ninth birthday today, with loads of family and friends in attendance. Unlike most of the large-scale entertaining we do on occasion, the kids parties usually come togther mostly through the efforts of my lovely bride, and my sole big to-do item is to make and decorate the cake.
Thankfully, the girls had much simpler demands on your humble baker and photographer than last year’s cake. The cakes had to be Olympics-themed, and they cared more about the flavors than the specifics of the decorations.
Thing One got the pink cake in the back, a two-layer lemon cake, filled with lemon curd, and covered with lemon buttercream and lemon-flavored, pink-tinted marshmallow fondant. Thing Two got the lavender-colored cake in the foreground, which I guess you could call a pineapple inside-out cake (two cornmeal-fortified pineapple upside down cakes, with the cakes stacked on top of each other, pineapple-to-pineapple) with vanilla buttercream and marshmallow fondant. All told, about 3 hours of work to decorate things, not including time to bake the cakes or make the fondant base.
Just grabbed a few shots of these in the overcast skies outside before guests arrived.
